At boom! you will see some amazing exhibits. Here we wanted to bring you a flavour of what is happening in the wider world of engineering.  You might not be able to see these at boom! but it gives you an idea of how engineering is constantly inventing and solving problems.

Engineering helps us explore space, the sea and the land. Without engineering we wouldn't have the tallest building in the world, the longest bridge or the fastest car. Historically, engineering has brought us the steam train, the telephone and the lightbulb. Things we use everyday like the car, the microwave and the i-phone are all down to engineers.

And what of the future? There's some crazy inventions out there. An edible race car? Yep. Really does exist.  The Formula 3 race car developed at the University of Warwick has carrot fibers in its steering wheel, potato starch in its side mirrors and cashew-nut shells in its brake pads. The whole thing runs on a biodiesel mix of chocolate and vegetable oil. Or what about smog eating cement that has been invented in Italy? And they've taken a step closer to the invisibility cloak at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany.

Our scrolling photos have some of latest news from the cutting edge of engineering.
